Age-Long Kunuga Nududu Tradition Observed at Gbi-Bla in Honour of Togbe Buami VIII
Gbi-Bla, November 5, 2022 — The Chiefs and people of Gbi gathered in solemn unity on Saturday to observe the age-old Kunuga Nududu tradition, marking the final funeral rites of Togbe Buami VIII.
As custom dictates, families of the deceased whose funerals customarily arranged to coincide with that of Togbe Buami VIII presented cooked traditional foods. Following the pouring of libation to God Almighty, the gods, the ancestors and the departed souls, portions of the food were ritualistically sprinkled on the ground to serve the spirits of the departed. The remainder was shared among the living, symbolizing harmony between the spiritual and physical worlds.
The ceremony, deeply rooted in cultural heritage and community bonding, was highlighted by a striking moment of solidarity. Blametsitsie Lawyer Hanson Senoo and Akunumetsitsie Dr. Augustine Fritz Gockel ate together with their bare hands from the same bowl—an act that reflected humility, shared heritage, and the enduring spirit of unity among the people of Gbi.
The observance of Kunuga Nududu not only honored Togbe Buami VIII but also affirmed the community’s commitment to preserving traditions that bind generations together.
